Pet Calming Meditation
NOTE: This Meditation was originally published at our sister site as a way to aid humans in calming their pets. It can be used at any time - including during end of life transitions.
Here's a gentle meditation script designed to help both you and your pet find a calm and peaceful state. This can be used for any pet, but it’s especially soothing for animals that are sensitive to stress.
**Pick The Best Time**
Be selective with timing on when to meditate with your pet. In the evening when they are winding down but before sleep is usually the best but it will depend on your routine. Don’t set yourself up for failure by choosing a time when your pet is typically more energetic or wound up. Choose a time in your routine when the pet will naturally be less energetic.
**Find a Comfortable Space**
Begin by finding a quiet, comfortable spot where you and your pet can sit or lie down together. Ensure the space is free from distractions and has a soothing atmosphere.
**Get Settled**
Gently encourage your pet to settle beside you. If they choose not to sit with you, it’s fine. They will find a comfortable space regardless of how close they are to you. You might want to pet them softly or let them rest their head on your lap. Find a comfortable position for yourself, sitting or lying down. Let them get settled and comfortable before you begin.
**Take Deep Breaths**
Start by taking a few deep breaths. Inhale slowly through your nose, allowing your lungs to fill completely. Hold the breath for a moment, then exhale slowly through your mouth. As you breathe, imagine any tension or stress leaving your body with each out-breath.
**Connect with Your Pet**
Place one hand gently on your pet’s body if they are near you. Feel the warmth and rhythm of their breathing. Allow yourself to synchronize your breathing with theirs. As you inhale, imagine drawing in calmness and tranquility. As you exhale, visualize any stress or anxiety dissolving away. (*You can use breath synchronization any time you want to connect with your pet in an effort to calm them – no matter where you are.)
**Visualize a Calm Space**
Picture a serene and peaceful place in your mind. It could be a sunny meadow, a quiet forest, or a cozy room. Imagine this place filled with soothing sounds and gentle, comforting energy. Visualize your pet there with you, completely at ease and happy.
**Send Calm Energy**
As you continue to breathe deeply, send calming, loving energy to your pet. Picture this energy as a warm, glowing light. Imagine it surrounding and enveloping your pet, bringing them comfort and relaxation. See this light spreading through their body, calming their mind and soothing any tension.
**Affirmation of Peace**
Repeat a gentle affirmation silently or aloud, such as: “We are calm. We are at peace. We are safe and loved.” Allow these words to resonate within you and your pet. Feel their soothing effect as you continue to breathe deeply.
**Enjoy the Moment**
Spend a few moments simply enjoying the tranquility. Feel the bond between you and your pet growing stronger as you share this peaceful experience. Let go of any remaining tension and bask in the calm energy surrounding you both.
**Gradual Transition to Close**
When you feel ready, gradually bring your awareness back to the present moment. Gently move your body and your pet and slowly open your eyes if they were closed. Take a moment to express gratitude for this shared calming experience.
You can use this meditation as often as needed, adapting it to fit the unique needs and preferences of you and your pet. It’s a wonderful way to deepen your bond while creating a calming and peaceful environment.
*Using Breath Synchronization when your pet is hyper or upset – synchronize your breath with theirs then deliberately slow your breathing little by little. Keep it up until your pet relaxes.
